CSLP Online Crowd-sourcing New Printed Materials

There’s an “Online Only” component to the CSLP online manual. If your library wants to create your own reading logs, posters, door hangers, etc. using the clipart from the CSLP online manual, you can. If they are of good quality and you’re willing to share them, they can be posted on the Online Only section of the CSLP online manual for others to use. Just send them to Sharon Rawlins, at srawlins@njstatelib.org and I’ll make sure they get posted.

Other updates:

GSBA update

Donna Gephardt will be the speaker at the Garden State Awards luncheon at the NJLA conference

Got a poster that had all of the nominees for the GSBA and GSTBA awards. Might have more posters available to be picked up at NJLA conference

Had a bad placement but some nice conversations at the NJASL conference in East Brunswick in December.

Voting update: 2,773 total votes (a strong increase from last year). 50% from public libraries. School libraries entirely submitted online (no paper ballots were submitted) but most public libraries were still using paper ballots.

Cape May includes ballot in summer Reading Packets

Winners will be announced at the end of the meeting. Will be publicly announced as soon as authors and publishers are notified!

Talking Book and Braille Center updates:

Large Print books are now easier to access via TBBC and they no longer need a doctor’s certification to access these books. Contact TBBC staff for more information if this would be helpful for your patrons.

Has been promoting GSBA to its patrons and have received great feedback from that.

Liz from TBBC has been appointed to be on the Newbery award committee for the next year. If anyone is doing a mock Newbery at their library, contact Liz as she’d love to participate as committee members are encouraged to do this in their community.

Submit for Honors and Awards-  deadline March 16

Please kindly share the website with the award descriptions with your committee/section: https://www.njla.org/honors-and-awards

And our new award -- the Innovative Program Award -- is ready too. Libraries come up with such great ideas, and we want to see them honored.

Some more Ideas: Think about a recent graduate for the Rising Star Award, a dedicated volunteer/Friends Group for the Library Champion Award, a local reporter for the Journalism Award, or a children's librarian with a great partnership with a school for the Amy Job Award.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Cynthia Becker

Connected Learning and Computational Thinking: A Recipe for Success

Bring youth services to the next level through Connected Learning (CL) and Computational Thinking (CT). Connect with YALSA’s Transforming Teen Services: Train the Trainer Approach trainers to demystify these concepts and identify how you’re probably already doing it at your library. Discover how intentionally using CL and CT in programming will help you better advocate for yourself and the youth you serve while engaging them in your library community and helping them gain valuable life skills. Facilitated by Meaghan Darling, Christine Jansen and Sharon Rawlins.

Workshop outcomes

Participants will be able to:

·         Dive into youth voice & choice

·         Explore the principles of Connected Learning and articulate the core concepts of Computational Thinking

·         Understand the philosophy of Connected Learning as it relates to educational and career opportunities

·         Think about how to operationalize Connected Learning theory into practice

·         Begin designing activities for and with youth that connect to Computational Thinking

·         Understand the value of integrating Computational Thinking into activities for and with youth

·         Connect Computational Thinking to pre-existing library activities and services.

Transforming Teen Services with Connected Learning was developed by YALSA and is aimed at improving competencies for library staff serving teens and are part of the YALSA/COSLA IMLS funded Transforming Teen Services: A Train the Trainer Approach (T3) project.
