Member Clicks

Activate your MemberClicks account by October 31st to continue to receive messages from CSS and other NJLA listservs. You should’ve received several emails from NJLA already to remind you to do this, but if you cannot find the email to set up your account, please email Aaron (apickett@ebpl.org) for help. See below for more details:

MemberClicks

NJLA will be launching a new membership database called MemberClicks on November 1st. Every member MUST select your own password. If you have not done so, go to MemberClicks  to update your account. Everyone who is a current member will automatically receive the general  NJLA updates, BUT to receive information from Section and Roundtable lists you must update your own account. Select participation in these specific lists by going into the E-lists section on your page:

·         Login into MemberClicks.

·         Under the Home tab select “Member Home”.

·         Under ‘My Profile’ select ‘My Features’. You will see a list of ‘E-lists’.

·         Select ‘on’ for the groups you want to join.

Please note: Make your selection per page. Then hit the refresh button. Hitting the refresh button SAVES your e-list selections. It will not save your selections if you do not hit the refresh button per page. If you do not make a selection on the page, you do not need to refresh.

All current lists will expire on November 1st and will be replaced with new lists through MemberClicks. If you have not updated your own membership account, you will not be able to receive or send to these lists. If you participate in an NJLA Committee, your email address has already been added to the specific committee list.

One hundred and fifty youth services librarians from public and school libraries attended the 29th annual Youth Services Forum: “Youth Services Are Lit!” on Monday, October 7, 2019 at the Monroe Township Public Library. This annual event, sponsored by NJSL, NJLA and NJASL, featured NJ author Wil Mara as the keynote speaker who presented a session on the myth of the reluctant reader. NJ illustrator/author Leeza Hernandez presented a session on creative writing called Finding the Write Words. Christine Whorton, the Teacher Naturalist for the NJ Audubon’s Urban Education Initiative presented a session on connecting youth to nature. Other session topics included yoga story time, welcoming teens to the library, the Chapter Quest role-playing game, going beyond having diverse books and a petting zoo on what nontraditional items are lent out by libraries.

Libraries = Success Public Library Card Campaign in Schools

Forty-five partnering public and school libraries participated in the Libraries = Success Public Library Card Campaign in September during National Library Card Sign-Up month. Public and school libraries received posters and a limited number of earbuds and tote bags provided by the State Library for the first students who registered for public library cards. This initiative was a joint project between NJSL, NJLA, NJASL and DOE, who provided funding for two statewide databases accessible by students in school and public libraries. The deadline for participating libraries to submit a report on their participation is the end of October.

Jacqueline Woodson’s Program October 16, 2019  - A Success!

The Literacy Alliance of NJ, comprised of the New Jersey Center for the Book, an affiliate of the Library of Congress, the NJ State Library, the NJ Library Association, the NJ Association of School Librarians, the College of New Jersey and Rutgers University hosted author Jacqueline Woodson on October 16, 2019 at TCNJ.  Ms. Woodson kept over 200 students from local schools entertained by her presentation at TCNJ. Thirty-five school and public libraries hosted off-site live streaming programs at the same time. In all, over 80 school and public libraries registered to host their own viewing event later the same day. Designed by Ms. Woodson, Library of Congress National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, her inspiring program Reading = HOPE x CHANGE (What’s your equation?) brings her together with her target audience, youth from around the state, in daylong activities designed to motivate their interest in reading. The National Ambassador for Young People's Literature is a program of The Library of Congress, the Children’s Book Council, and Every Child a Reader

Additional Leap into Science Trainings Offered in 2019

The state leadership team consisting of staff from the NJ State Library, NJ Makers Day and the Newark Museum continue to offer trainings for Cohort Year 2 of this initiative. This year’s training focuses on the concept of wind for staff in public/school libraries/afterschool organizations who work with children ages 3 – 10 and their caregivers. If you are interested in participating in this training, please contact Sharon Rawlins, srawlins@njstatelib.org. Leap into Science is a nationwide program developed by The Franklin Institute Science Museum and the National Girls Collaborative Project funded by the National Science Foundation that integrates open- ended science activities with children’s books.

Sharing on Behalf of NJASL:

NJASL Asks School Media Specialists - Would You Be Interested in Participating in A Research Study?

Joyce Valenza, along with a group of wonderful librarians, is working on a new research study.

We are seeking participants for a statewide research study to explore the value of certified school librarians in providing instruction and resources to prepare students for academic work; bridge situations of inequity, information poverty; and identify gaps relating to academic preparedness among freshmen students in New Jersey colleges.

Led by Dr. Joyce Valenza of Rutgers University, the research team will select a sample of 20 to 30 high schools that meet the American Association of School Librarians' (AASL's) Definition of an Effective School Library Program

We are interested in understanding how college students who have had an effective high school library program, adjust to academic research in their freshman year of college. Do the experiences of these non-novice researchers look different from those of the general freshman population?  What are the differences in which high school library programs prepare students for college?

Survey results can potentially help to identify specific effective practices, compare practices across high school contexts, understand challenges and barriers faced by professionals, develop strategies and tools to improve current practice and to inform the preparation of pre-service school library candidates.

We are seeking candidates to participate in Stage 1 in a multi-stage research process.

If selected, librarians will:

1. Respond to a survey regarding their high school library program

2. Act as a liaison to introduce the study to their local administrators. (Dr. Valenza and the research team will provide letters of cooperation to school administrators explaining the study guidelines.)

3. Attend a brief online training session with the research team.

4. Help recruit a volunteer student sample by distributing a flyer to the graduating Class of 2020. The flyer will invite students to share email contact information using a secure online spreadsheet form accessible only to the research team. This will allow the Research Team to contact and check-in with students at the end of their college freshman year to explore their initial experiences with college research.

A follow-up study will engage academic librarians throughout the state to examine differences in competence and confidence between your students and those in the general freshman population.

We hope you will consider applying to participate in this important project.

We will select a sample of high schools based on the AASL criteria and consideration of demographic, economic and geographic representation.

The research team includes:

·         Joyce Valenza, Ph.D., Rutgers University, Principal Investigator

·         Brenda Boyer, Ph.D., PTL, Rutgers University, School of Communication and Information, Department of Library and Information Science, Co-Principal Investigator

·         Rebecca Bushby, MLIS, Education Librarian at The College of New Jersey Library, Co-Principal Investigator

·         Ewa Dziedzic-Elliott, MLIS, Head Librarian, Lawrence High School, Investigator

·         Lisa Manganello, MLIS, PTL, Rutgers University, School of Communication and Information, Department of Library and Information Science, Librarian South Brunswick High School, Expert/Advisor)

If you are selected for the study, all efforts will be made to keep your responses confidential. We will use the password-protected Qualtrics survey platform to collect and analyze your responses. Once data collection is complete, your identifiable information will be destroyed so no link will exist between your identity and your responses. No information that can identify you will appear in any professional presentation or publication. Your participation in this research will be voluntary. You would have the right to withdraw at any point during the study, for any reason, and without any prejudice.

While results will be confidential, any high schools participating will receive de-identified, aggregated data from the study. We hope the data we collect will help us collaboratively develop even more effective K12 library programs.
