Save your Books! An Intro to Repairing and Preserving Books, Paper, and Pamphlets
Participants will become familiar with several types of basic repairs for collections materials in public, school and academic libraries. Tip-ins and basic page repairs, hinge tightening, and a variety of spine repairs will be demonstrated. Examples of protective treatments for special collections materials will be covered.
Presenter: Kim Avagliano is the Supervising Librarian and Branch Manager of the Monmouth County Library Eastern Branch in Shrewsbury. She has conducted hands-on book repair workshops for school, public, academic and special library groups across New Jersey. Her interest and self-directed education in book repair began with a program at the Preservation Department of Johns Hopkins University, and continued through various classes and workshops at the Center for Book Arts, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the Montefiascone Project, among others. Kim enjoys working with, and especially learning from, people who share a love of libraries and the book.
