Personnel Administration Minutes - 11/21/14

Michael Maziekien, Dale Spindel, Lina Podles, Judy Mansbach, Pat Tumulty, Karen Brodsky, Selwa Shamy

Core Competencies - Lina

It wasn't brought up to the Professional Development Committee yet. We don't want to step on someone's toes so it is not a good idea to do the Poster session after all. Another reason to not do a poster session is that the table has to be staffed for an extensive time. A lot of labor for not such a great outcome.

Michael had a discussion with another director about basic training that all the libraries need.

The Webjunction core competencies are not usable by smaller libraries.

Lina said NYPL used to have seminars for professional development. Maybe a manual could be developed for trainings of this type. The project will span more than a year.

Lots of changes of what librarians do from year to year. Constant growth.

Pat said the Model Manual and Salary Guide are more important than Core Competencies.

The Professional Development Committee is working on their micro-conferences now but after January they have an open slate, so they could possibly take it on.

Conference Task Force - Dale

These programs have been submitted

  • Service Animals in the Library - two organizations, Semper Fido Inc & Dogs for Warriors

  • Mentor, Motivate and Maintain - Adele Puccio and Candace Brown.

Resume Speed Dating, proposed time is Monday night from 6:00-7:00 pm - needs to still be submitted. A few people have volunteered to review resumes. Probably won't get a lot of people.

Personnel Manual - Karen

Karen went to a workshop held for municipalities. She talked to an attorney about using their handbook or a sample handbook. The lawyers do not do a sample municipal handbook because there is too much diversity.

Price would be between $3000-5000 for them to draft a handbook.

A template is different than a handbook, it is a guideline. “This is what you need to be considered when writing a manual.” Highlighting which issues are variable and give guidelines of where to find the information.

Most everybody wants to work on this so it will be a whole day meeting. Karen will post a doodle poll for a meeting in mid to late January or early February.

Minimum Salary Recommendations for 2015

The committee is recommending a 2% increase.

Executive Director Comments - Pat

Melissa Lina will replace Sue Rice, who has been there almost 25 years. She will work 5 hours a week to help with the transition.

The NJLA office is busy with conference preparations

YS Forum attendance was almost 200 people

Adult Services Forum had an attendance of 130 people

Public Policy Forum attendance was almost 49 people

Governor Christie vetoed the budget for libraries

Looking at legislation so municipalities could vote on allocating more than a third of a mill for libraries. This will hopefully be introduced soon.

The Strategic Plan is still in progress.

Executive Board Liaison Comments - Michael

  • Looked at other states to see if speakers have to pay registration for professional library conferences, and yes, they do. If you attend the conference and are participating on a panel you still have to pay for the conference, if you are a NJ librarian.

  • The endorsement of closing library for staff training has not been voted on yet.

Membership Committee Liaison - Michael

Conference proposals

  • Mock Interview Review: You've Got the interview, now what?

  • Conversation Starter: Professionalism on the Edge

Mixer at Barcade in Jersey City this Sunday afternoon.

December & January meetings will be cancelled. A doodle poll will go out to determine a January or February meeting to work on the Personnel Manual.
